This pastel was added to a street grate rubbing I did during a road trip across country in 2005. I saved this rubbing from 2005, along with three others. The saved rubbings and one new rubbing are a part of a five-rubbing series (all the same size, all street grate rubbings). I have to say, the Sennelier pastels are a joy to work with—and I used a lot of their neon colors, which are so rich and unusual. This rubbing means a lot to me. The phoenix bird signifies triumphant return from the ashes. The title of the piece is inspired by the final chorus of the Smog song, “Say, Valley Maker” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yanDvMWtbgE
