"Diaspora" (Mural) (1999) archival print
Hot press archival print is 18”x18”
All prints are created at The Stackhouse Printery.
Original is oil on eight 8’x 1’ carved pine panels, 8’x8’.
Distressed pine panels, rough-finished with white gesso backing. The mural appears as a kind of found artwork—maybe a decorative fence from a dreamed-up rural place.
Original is $5000. Careful shipping is $250 additional, or a pickup can be arranged.
This mural was created from an old National Geographic photograph of three Indonesian women. I think of them as the maiden, the mother and the crone. The background design comes from a linoleum block print I made called “Mama and Papa”. The symbols of that imagery are meant to be familiar—you’ll see a bird, a fish, a dolphin—pods and flowers. The tiny yellow flowers of the maiden’s dress were inspired by a ceiling I saw in Luxor: yellow stars in a turquoise sky.
